Velma Southerland has been employed in the lifestyles section of an award-winning East Tennessee community newspaper for more than 20 years. She writes about weddings, births and major life events of people and organizations in the community. She has freelanced both her words and her photos to a number of print magazines and other publications, published an award-winning newsletter and is the publicity chairman for a theater in the area.

Her love of theatre, photography and working with words goes back to her girlhood. She is fascinated by unsolved crimes, which probably also originated in her early years when she discovered Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. The library was her hideout, her favorite escape and eventually one of her early workplaces.

She was an English major at Carson-Newman College and has taken finance classes at East Tennessee State University and painting and genealogy courses at Tusculum College as well.
